"Half Written Story" is the first body of work since 2015's "H.A.I.Z" EP. This one is coming out in two separate parts, and we can conclude that the first five songs are personal and intimate. The rest of the record will be released later this year.
The EP starts with "I Love You's," a song about going through a breakup and not wanting to jump immediately into a new relationship. "Where do I begin?" she's asking herself. "I've been so fucked up it's bad for my heart." In an interview with "V Magazine," she tells a little bit of the backstory behind the track: "I went through a breakup and entered a new relationship probably too soon after that breakup. And I guess there's never really like, a designated time you're meant to let go by, you know, before jumping into something new. (…) But anyway, I went into this one relationship. And when that ended, I felt like the wind had been just knocked out of me. I just was like, completely heartbroken. (…) So when I heard this for the first time, it resonated with me on a spiritual level."
The song's introduction is a sample from the cover of Annie Lenox's song "No more' I love you's" (the original music is from the British duo The Lover Speaks, released in 1986.

"Your Name Hurts" it's about all the pain of the end. "We're a half-written story without any ending/You left me to figure it out/Filled me with ecstasy, left with the best of me/ But where's the rest of me now?"
"End This (L.O.V.E.)" sees Steinfeld singing in a lower range about a trouble breakup, describing what she learned from that. "L is for the way you lied to me/O is I'm the only one who sees that/ V, you're so vindictive, so I'll be vicious/ And E-N-D this L-O-V-E, love, love."
"Man Up" is a hip-hop-influenced pop-rap song. Here, she means that she wants the boy to be a better person.
"Wrong Direction" is the final destination of this ride. On this regretful ballad, the only one here, Hailee, calls out an ex-lover after realizing their relationship wasn't as perfect as she expected it to be. "Loved me with your worst intentions/ Didn't even stop to question/ Every time you burned me down/ Don't know how; for a moment it felt like heaven."
"Half Written Story" is intimate and proves her genuine love for music. We're here waiting for the second part.
